Government Action Alert
Dear Friends of Diabetes Research,
Thank you to so many of you who have made government support of stem cell research your special cause and have contacted President Bush and other government officials about the urgent need for this important funding. You have made a difference!
Lets us look at the proverbial glass half full. By proclamation of the President, stem cell research will continue. It is not 100% of what we would have liked but enough to continue the crusade. It was also the opening of the door for Congress to effect legislation in favor of more funding because of the Presidential initiative. Since scientists have been using stem cells, we are guaranteed that they can proceed in the research they have started.
FDR members most realize the impact the decision will have. There will be limited public sector funding. That means the private sector must continue its efforts to raise money to fund new scientific discoveries. This past Thursday our Grant Committee met to review our progress and to determine if it is feasible to fund another project at this time. Hopefully, we will be able to fund another grant to a scientist or institution in the spring keeping in mind our commitment to our current grant.
Recently, I accompanied my daughter to her eye specialist in New York. He is also involved in a pharmacological protocol to eliminate need for laser surgery. He spoke to us about what he sees in the future. It was his opinion that within the next 10 to 15 years there will be a cure for diabetes. His words were, "Heather, someday soon you will say that you had diabetes"
We are getting closer to that day! The formula for success is simple: WE need money to fund research. Research will find a cure.
These truly seem to be the beginning of the Best of Days.
