Letter from the President

It has been a privilege for me to work with a group of dedicated people to help find a cure for diabetes.

We are united by a special and unique bond. All of us have been touched in some way by diabetes, some through our children – sometimes more than one, others through our families

I believe each one of us has an important mission. We are here to make a difference in the world. “If everyone puts in a drop of sand, we will be able to build an enormous castle, making an impact on other people's lives, all over the world.”

We know that diabetes never takes a holiday. It is 24 there hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year – with NO breaks. I watch my sons, Itai and Asaf, struggle each and every day – a life filled with blood tests, infusions, shots, counting carbohydrates, exercise and dealing with the consequences this disease places on their young bodies.

My children are my inspiration. I see them fight every day to stay alive. Everything they have achieved requires additional effort, above and beyond the ordinary.

For them, and for all individuals who suffer with Type 1 Diabetes, I pledge to continue to help raise the necessary funds to discover the cure.

I am proud to be involved with The Foundation for Diabetes Research. This organization is be made up of many wonderful volunteers and employees who invest their time, effort and expertise to raise money to find the cure.

This organization is now five years young. To date we have raised over $2 million dollars and supported significant research grants. This could not have been accomplished without the time and energy of our past - Presidents, Chair and Committee Members, Volunteers, Supporters and Office Staff.

Our past grant recipients include the Diabetes Research Institute , in Florida, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center , in Los Angeles and The Naomie Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City.

I am especially proud of a grant we awarded to Dr. Pastori of the Diabetes Research Institute. Because of our seed money, he was awarded an additional grant of $2,000,000 dollars from the National Institute of Health and other organizations.

Today, we need to focus on how to make our organization one that will continue to make a difference to those afflicted with diabetes and their families. It is my dream that with everyone's help, we will increase our membership, raise more money, assist families of newly diagnosed children, and introduce new and exciting events to fund more grants.

Of course, this will only be possible if we can continue to count on your help.

I would like to leave you with one last thought…

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful people can make a difference.  In fact it is the only thing that ever has".
