Research Update

The Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) at the University of Miami School of Medicine has recently sent out a progress report on what they are working on. Summarizing the report, the major areas are as follows:

Pancreatic Stem Cell Development
DRI scientists are trying to increase the supply of insulin producing tissue so that more transplants can be done. It now takes more than one pancreas to do a transplant.

Transplants without Immunosuppression
Transplants without harmful anti-rejection drugs is another goal that is being studied.

Gene Therapy
Manipulating genes so that they can secrete insulin and can be resistant to "death signals" is tied into the transplant scenario.

Research Equipment
Purchasing the latest generations of equipment to facilitate the research is yet another step forward.

Islet Research
Advancement on this front will help in early intervention to protect planted cells.
